Sciatica can be a debilitating condition. The pain that runs from your spine down your leg, and the resulting numbness and weakness, can make it hard or impossible for one to work or function. It can be caused by compression, spinal degeneration, bone spurs, or inflammation.

Yet there is good news. There are effective treatments for sciatica that can restore function and halt the progression of symptoms. Dr. Jason Attaman can help.

What is the best treatment for sciatica?

Sciatica often responds best to a combination of treatments. For example, physical therapy and chiropractic adjustments can be beneficial, as massage therapy can be. Dr. Attaman may refer you to practitioners who specialize in therapeutic methods. In some cases, pain-relieving medication may be appropriate.

Lumbar therapeutic injections and epidural steroid injections are also effective therapies that we can handle here in our clinic on an outpatient basis. In some cases we may also recommend a selective nerve root block. We will look at addressing the root cause of the sciatica: if you have a herniated disc, for example, then we’ll help you address that issue.

When we administer injections we use image guidance to reduce side effects and risk factors. Each injection is delivered precisely, so as to deliver maximum pain relief.

We offer these treatments after a thorough evaluation of underlying causes so that we can help create a route towards the total removal of your sciatica symptoms. We also want to ensure that an underlying tumor or disease isn’t the cause so that you can get appropriate care.

How long will sciatica take to heal?

Sciatica, when managed through physical therapy and chiropractic care, can be gone within a few weeks, though some people struggle with chronic sciatica pain.

Most of our patients report symptom relief very soon after our injection treatments, and long-term relief upon following their individualized treatment plan. Our goal is to get you through this as quickly as possible so you can get back to living your life.

Do you offer telemedicine appointments for sciatica?

Yes, we offer telehealth appointments for sciatica, though of course if you need imaging or an injection we’ll need to meet here in our office. Nevertheless, we can evaluate your symptoms over the course of the call, refer you to any necessary specialists like chiropractors and physical therapists, and can evaluate whether a more intensive treatment strategy is called for.  You can choose between a secure audio chat or a secure video chat.
